What are Coursework
Assignments?
Coursework
Assignments (CWAs) are required to pass Diploma Unit 1: The Global Business of
Alcoholic Beverages. The assignments are independent research papers that will
either take the form of reports or essays of between 1500 and 2000 words. The
assignment titles (the questions to be answered) will be posted on the Wine and
Spirit Education Trust web site www.wset.co.uk in May and will be valid for the next
two submission dates in November and April. Each assignment will have a
particular ÔbusinessÕ issue as part of the brief. Once you have successfully
completed four assignments you will be awarded Unit 1 - The Global Business
of Alcoholic Beverages.
Further information about Coursework Assignments can be found in the Candidate Assessment Guide
How many coursework assignments
do I have to pass to gain Unit 1?
You will need to submit and pass 4
coursework assignments in total to gain Unit 1. These assignments are not due
all at one deadline or even in one academic year. To the contrary, you decide
how many assignments, if any, you will submit for the bi-annual deadlines.
Can I
submit all 4 assignments in one year?
Yes, but we
would strongly advise that you spread the workload over two years. This will
also allow you to benefit from feedback.
Where can I find the questions
for the Coursework Assignments?
The questions are posted on the WSET
website (west.co.uk) under the Qualification: Diploma: Coursework Assignments
subheadings.
Will we be receiving additional
guidance on how to write each coursework assignment?
Yes, each Unit 1 coursework
assignment title will be accompanied by an assignment brief detailing what is
required and how the weighting of marks will be allocated. Too, the Candidate
Assessment Guide offers detailed information on preparing your papers.
When can I hand my coursework
assignment in?
There will be two submission dates
in each academic year; these will be the second Tuesday in November and April.
Do I have to inform International
Wine Center when I want to hand in a Coursework Assignment?
Absolutely, it is imperative that
you inform us which titles out of the 4 you will be submitting and in which
month. This is important, as we
will need to register you with WSET Awards 2 weeks before the actual submission
date. If you fail to do youÕre
your assignment may not be valid for submission.
What happens if I have registered
to hand a piece of coursework in but due to work constraints realize that
this is impossible?
You will have the option to transfer
your submission date for a minimal administration fee (please note that this is
only possible if the second submission date falls within the same academic
year). Alternatively if you choose
not to hand your coursework in you will loose your registration fee and pay an
additional fee when you are ready to submit your coursework assignment.
If I submit all 4 pieces of
coursework in November but fail them all can I then resubmit them again in
April when I have done more work on them?
No, you only have one attempt at
each of the 4 titles per academic year.
If I submit 2 pieces of
coursework in November but fail them, can I then submit the other two titles in
April?
Yes, the new system allows
candidates to re-sit in the same academic year but candidates can only attempt
a title once.
If I
submit a coursework in April when will I get my results?
Results are
issued within 12 weeks.
Are the
coursework assignments still attached to specific units?
NO, All
assignments are now attached to Unit 1 and will therefore not be associated
with the different units. The assignments are now focused on the global market
of wines and spirits rather than a specific subject such as sparkling or
fortified wines.
Last year
I passed the coursework assignment for Unit 4 (Spirits), how many more
assignments do I need to complete to pass Unit 1?
3 (THREE),
all candidates must complete 4 assignments in total to pass Unit 1. Any
previous assignments gained will be valid.
As I have
already passed the Unit 4 assignment, does this mean that I cannot submit this
year's Assignment No. 4 (FOUR)?
NO, you can
choose ANY of the 4 titles published for this academic year.
