Scholarships

everal scholarships are available to International Wine Center students who wish to further their wine studies. Some are offered by International Wine Center, others are offered by outside organizations. Following is a complete listing:

Niki Singer Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship honors the memory of Niki Singer, a communications consultant who was an important contributor to the development of the U.S. wine market over the last 30 years. Working closely with industry leaders, she emphasized the human factor in wine, highlighting the people and personalities behind the labels to expand the market. Niki was also a longtime friend and consultant to IWC. She passed away Feb. 1, 2007.

Top-scoring students in the WSET® Intermediate Certificate and WSET® Advanced Certificate courses at IWC are eligible to apply for the scholarship, a $2,000 grant for furthering wine study through courses or travel to wine regions. To be eligible, students must achieve a grade of 94 or higher on the Intermediate exam or earn Distinction on the Advanced exam within the academic year.

Eligible students will receive an application from IWC. A scholarship essay of 1,000 – 1,500 words addressing the topic: “What person or persons have most inspired you in the field of wine, and how?” must be submitted as well.

Les Dames D’Escoffier-New York Annual Scholarship Program
Les Dames d’Escoffier is an international organization of professional women in the food, wine and hospitality industries dedicated to supporting and promoting the understanding, appreciation and knowledge of food and wine disciplines. Through its annual scholarship program, Les Dames d’Escoffier-New York supports the area’s top female students in these fields. In 2007, the organization awarded $46,000 of scholarship funds to 16 accomplished students.

Scholarship application forms are available through IWC in February and are due in April. Candidates must be enrolled in or in the process of enrolling for an IWC class to qualify. Application requirements include a resume, official transcript, two professional letters of recommendation and an essay of less than 500 words. For more information on Les Dames D’Escoffier-New York please visit www.ldny.org. For an application form, please call IWC at (212) 239-3055.

Intermediate Certificate Perfect Score Scholarship
To the elite handful of students who achieve a perfect score on the Intermediate Certificate exam, IWC awards a scholarship to pursue the Advanced Certificate exam. Fewer than 10 students in IWC’s 26-year history have achieved this accomplishment. These top-scoring students are contacted by IWC when grades are posted.

Teaching Assistant Program
Opportunities are available for selected individuals to serve as teaching assistants in our Intermediate Certificate classes. Teaching assistants help set up, pour wines and clean up. For their service, teaching assistants receive a discounted course rate. These positions, limited in number, are generally filled four months in advance of the course and require attendance at an orientation session. Selection of teaching assistants is at the discretion of the Director of Operations; an interview is required. For more information, call (212) 239-3055 between 2 and 5 p.m., or email info@internationalwinecenter.com

If your company or organization would like to sponsor a scholarship, please contact us at (212) 239-3055.
