Home Study

e offer our courses as Home Study programs for those outside the greater New York metropolitan area who cannot come to the Center for classes. Home Study students receive the same materials as in-class students, along with a list of recommended wines to taste. Telephone support is available from IWC staff. To take exams, students generally must come to NYC.

We offer WSET Intermediate Certificate (in Spanish as well as English), the Advanced Certificate and the Diploma Home Study programs only to those who reside in the United States or its possessions. If you live or work within convenient traveling distance to New York City or another WSET center in the U.S., we encourage you to enroll for classes instead of independent Home Study. For a complete list of WSET centers in the U.S., see our page WSET in America or visit the WSET web site. You must register with the WSET center where you intend to take your exam.

Registering for Home Study Programs

You can register by telephone using a major credit card by calling International Wine Center 212-239-3055 or faxing 212-239-3051.

To register by mail, send a check for the full amount of the program to International Wine Center, 350 Seventh Avenue, Suite 1201, New York, NY 10001; indicate which program you are registering for, and include the address where you want your materials sent.

First Level
Intermediate Certificate Course
Our first level course requires no previous wine knowledge. It is also appropriate for those whose knowledge includes only some types of wine. The WSET Intermediate Certificate Home Study packet includes:
  • Wines and Spirits: Looking Behind the Label, a 93-page textbook
  • 72-page review guide with self-study questions and answers cross-referenced to the textbook including space to record tasting notes
  • list of types of wines tasted in class
  • pronunciation guide

To earn the Intermediate Certificate of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, you must successfully complete a one-hour examination with 50 multiple-choice questions on material covered in the study packet. The exam does not include wine-tasting.

Course Fee
$278 plus $10.00 registration fee and $10.50 shipping fee. Besides registration and materials, the course fee includes exam costs for a regularly-scheduled exam date in New York City. You must give us 15 business days notice to participate in a regularly-scheduled exam. Exams on other dates or in other locations entail an additional proctoring fee of $100.

Second Level
Advanced Certificate Course
Our second level program covers the wines and spirits of the world in considerable depth. It is appropriate for those who have taken the Intermediate Certificate, or have a good foundation of wine knowledge and experience in wine tasting.

The WSET Advanced Certificate Home Study packet includes
  • Exploring the World of Wines & Spirits, a 244-page textbook,
  • 160-page review guide with self-study questions and answers cross-referenced to the textbook which includes maps and a place to record tasting notes
  • list of types of wines tasted in class
  • additional course handouts, which are not part of the syllabus.
To earn the Advanced Certificate of the Wine and Spirit Education Trust, you must successfully complete a two-hour examination which includes 50 multiple-choice questions, four short-answer questions and a blind tasting of one wine. The exam tests your knowledge of material covered in the study packet.

Course Fee
$488, plus a $10.00 registration fee and $16.50 shipping fee.
The fee covers registration, materials, and the exam fee when taken on a regularly- scheduled date in New York City. You must give us 15 business days notice to participate in a regularly-scheduled exam. Privately-proctored exams entail an additional fee of $430.00.

Advanced Level
Diploma Course
Available only to Advanced Certificate holders. Please see the Diploma FAQ for more course information. In brief, Diploma consists of six units of study and assessment; of these, Units 1 and 2 must be studied first. Unit 1, The Global Business of Wine, does not have an exam; you are tested by writing four research papers over two years. The Unit 2 exam is a multiple-choice exam on viticulture and vinification. Subsequent exams include blind wine-tasting and essays.

Course Fee
All fees are for 2006-2007 study: $1,348 includes your three-year registration in Diploma, WSET mentoring program, and all materials and exam fees for Units 1 & 2. The exam is offered only in New York City. Current Home Study fees for subsequent Units of study are
Unit 3, Wines of the World, $1,068
Unit 4, Spirits, $368
Unit 5, Sparkling Wines, $318
Unit 6, Liqueur Wines, $318

Studying the Material:
With the exception of Diploma, which has set deadlines for assignments and exams, you can study at your own pace. As a guideline, our in-class Intermediate Certificate program is eight sessions, and Advanced Certificate is fifteen sessions. To receive the full benefit of the course, try to taste the types of wine recommended in the syllabus, following the list included in your kit. Some students have found it useful to organize a tasting group for this purpose. The information on wine-tasting in each textbook, along with a tasting-note booklet, gives a full explanation of the WSET's approach to wine tasting. We are also available for telephone support.

Taking the Examination:
When you are ready to schedule your exam, call us at 212-239-3055 to make arrangements. We need 15 business days notice to include you in a scheduled exam. Diploma has its own set of deadlines which we will inform you of when you register.

If you wish to arrange a private exam, please contact International Wine Center at least four weeks before the date you wish to take the exam, to allow sufficient lead time for us to obtain the examination from London, and to schedule the exam with the proctor.

Receiving Your Examination Results:
Reporting times for grades vary from three to twelve weeks, depending on the exam. We receive your grade from WSET, and notify you. Soon thereafter, you receive your Intermediate Certificate or Advanced Certificate, or a statement of Diploma credits earned.
