IWC students can earn official WSET credentials: Foundation Certificate, Intermediate Certificate, Advanced Certificate, and Diploma. All instructors hold the WSET Diploma.*

The Levels
The classes are a progression, beginning with Foundation, an introductory course to wine. Intermediate Certificate, Advanced Certificate and Diploma follow. Each of these levels covers the entire world of wine including viticulture, vinification, and appellation labeling laws, as well as wine-tasting technique. The Advanced Certificate is a strict prerequisite for Diploma.

Advance payment is required for all programs. Register by telephone or FAX with American Express, VISA or MasterCard; call (212) 239-3055, or FAX (212) 239-3051. You may also send a check to International Wine Center (350 7th Ave Suite 1201, New York, NY 10001). As a courtesy to wine businesses, we will invoice those companies that have established credit with us.

Refunds
  • If you cancel your place before the course begins you will receive a refund of the class fee, less a 10% cancellation fee. If we have sent out the materials kit to you, you must return it, complete and unused, in order to receive full credit. Registration and shipping fees are not refundable.
  • If you cancel after the class begins, no refunds apply. However, your registration is fully transferable to another person for the same course and session, subject to qualification. If you miss a class, you are welcome to make up the class next term.


Home Study
If you live and work outside of the New York, New Jersey and Connecticut metropolitan area, you may study for all levels through independent home study. Makeup Examination Dates
If you are not able to take your Intermediate or Advanced Certificate examination on the scheduled date, you may participate in the next scheduled exam, space permitting (the exam dates are listed in the class schedules); unless you give us 15 Business Days notice that you will not sit the exam on your original date, additional fees apply. If you want to arrange for a private makeup exam at another time, proctor fees apply in addition to any exam fees. Please call or email us for more information. You can refer to the exam dates listed in the class schedule.

You must reserve a seat for any regularly-scheduled examination by notifying International Wine Center at least 15 Business Days before the date you plan to take the exam.

Teaching Assistant Program
Opportunities are available for selected individuals to work with and learn from our instructors by serving as teaching assistants in our Intermediate Certificate classes. Teaching assistants help set up, pour wines and clean up. Teaching assistants receive a discounted course rate. These positions, limited in number, are generally filled three months in advance of the course. Admission is on a rolling basis. Selection of teaching assistants is at the discretion of the Director of Operations. An interview is required. Ideal for consumers or those new to wine, Foundation focuses on the main styles of wines available, tasting technique, wine and food pairing as well as wine etiquette. The class consists of two three-hour sessions and concludes with a short multiple-choice exam.

Class is appropriate for students who have a serious interest in wine, and those who wish to broaden their knowledge. Intermediate Certificate covers the wines and spirits of the world in eight two-hour sessions, followed by a one-hour multiple choice examination on the ninth session. The intensive class is condensed into three days with the exam held on the same day as the last class. Wine tasting is a part of every class. Successful candidates receive the WSET Intermediate Certificate.*

Spirits Certificate

(Level Two)
The Spirits Certificate is designed to provide a thorough knowledge of spirits and liqueurs. The course covers the history, production and style of spirits of the world: Cognac, Armagnac and other brandies; Scotch, Bourbon and whiskeys; white spirits, including vodka, rum, tequila, gin; and liqueurs and other flavored spirits. Tasting is part of every session. A one-hour examination includes 50 multiple-choice questions and a theoretical tasting note of one spirit or liqueur. Successful candidates receive the WSET Spirits Certificate.*

Coverage of wines and spirits of the world in considerable depth over 15 sessions. The Advanced Certificate is appropriate for those who have gone through the Intermediate Certificate level and have a good foundation of wine knowledge. It is a pre-requisite for the Diploma Course. The intensive course is condensed into five days with the exam on the day after the last class. The examination for the Advanced Certificate includes 50 multiple-choice questions, four short-answer questions and a blind tasting of one wine. Successful candidates receive the WSET Advanced Certificate.*
